About the maker:

Born 1877, died 1944.
Apprenticed to E. Laurent 1890, worked in Paris for Gustave Bernardel 1903. Successor to Blanchard’s business at Lyons, 1913.

‘Gave all possible artistic impulse to reproducing the Stradivarius model. Accomplished his work with some besides mechanical precision. Oil varnish of a delightful reddish-orange tint. Principle maker to the Convervatoire at Lyons, and the Symphony Orchestras.’ WM Henley

A truly exceptional example from the maker, featured in the book ‘Wanderer’ by Bruce Babbit.
‘These violins and bows are things the author has set aside in most cases.  They were never meant to be a collection, only in the respect that they each were seen as beautiful examples of the maker’s work.  The book is a glance at this group of things mid stride.  In the ..Proem…, the author tries to describe how the book came about, and the proposition that this journey, part wandering, part wondering, is in itself a work of art.’

The clarity of varnish is matched by its tone.
A superb example both for the player or collector.
